Some Key Actions for Literacy 2017-2018

 

Raising the profile of reading - reading for pleasure and promoting wider reading

  • Develop reading spines for each class - a core list of books that a class must share as class reads throughout the year
  • Daily story time for every class
  • Reading stars of the week celebrated in Friday afternoon assembly
  • Staff sharing recommended reads and 'reading rivers' during assembly time
  • A half term reading day in school
  • Bring a book to lunch! 3 times a half term
  • Wow reading corners, that children use and love
  • Develop a reading council
  • Increase the number of library visits

 

Teaching and Learning - teaching fluency and comprehension

  • Further develop the long term planning in Literacy
  • Review and update our reading policy
  • Reintroduce guided reading in Key Stage 2
  • Training sessions from an external provider every term - reading comprehension strategies
  • Phonics training for new staff members
  • Modelled guided reading sessions for new staff members
  • Targeted one to one reading for children
  • Further develop reading opportunities within topic week
  • Develop reading opportunities within extra curricular activities

 

Parents - setting ambitious expectations for reading at home
